Joe McNally Workshop in Dobb’s Ferry, NY!

Yup, I’ve seriously neglected my blog here! The good news is, I have some photos to share. I’ll try to update this a little more often than once every 6 weeks from now on.

On June 30th I attended a workshop hosted by Joe McNally. If you don’t know who Joe is, you should check out his website, his blog, or one of his books. Joe has done some really amazing work for some small publications like National Geographic, and he continues to produce leading edge images today. On top of that, he’s a really down to earth guy.

We spent the day talking about lights: small lights, big lights, bounced light, diffused light, etc. It was a really informative class with a lot of good takeaway information. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to do more with off camera light, and spend the day shooting with an amazing photographer!

EOS Speedlite Workshop with Bob Davis

Yesterday I was in NYC at a Canon sponsored Live Learning Event presented by photographer Bob Davis (check out his work here and here). The class was focused on using Canon Speedlites as an alternative to traditional studio strobes. We worked with different light modifiers, learned about using the wireless system, light placement, mixing ambient light and flash, etc. Canon provided the gear, studio and models, and the day consisted a mix of instruction and time shooting.

I have to say, I’ve done a few workshops on lighting and portraiture, but I don’t think I’ve come away with so much valuable information as I did with this class. It was really informative, Bob Davis really rocks it as a photographer, and he’s also a good instructor. I left truly inspired to put a lot of what he showed us in action. I’d recommend this class to anyone using the EOS Speedlite system that wants to kick it up a notch. You can check out the calendar of events on Canon’s Live Learning website.

The photo below was actually taken without using flash. Bob was demonstrating a technique using the flash, which had more visual impact than my photo without the flash, but I still like this image.
