I have (mostly) completed the transition from my old blog to my new one. There are still some kinks I need to work out, but this one is pretty much ready for prime-time, so I’m going for it. As you can se, I was able to import all of my old blog’s content into this one, so I will probably take the old one offline at some point. Just Announced: Canon EOS 7D

Photo nerds rejoice, Canon has just released the much anticipated 7D! A first look at this new camera unveils a host of new features for the Canon camp, including:

18 megapixels sensor
Completely redesigned and customizable auto focus with 19 cross point sensors
8 frames per second image capture
Built in flash commander
In camera electronic level
A new video system with many more options
etc…

My thoughts? I think there are a lot of serious amateurs and pros out there who were hoping Canon would release something nicer and with more features than the current 50D, but who did not want to move into a 1 series body. Even though I don’t see this as a camera that I will buy, I’m very excited about the improved auto-focus, the internal level, and the internal flash control. Canon will likely include these features in future camera releases.

I’ll be looking forward to see what the experts have to say about the image quality, especially at high ISO. Despite Canon marketing talking up the high ISO capabilities of the 50D when it was released, it turned out to be not so exciting in use. Now the 7D is released with the same size sensor, but with 3 million more pixels crammed into it, so I think it remains to be seen how real world performance will measure up.

Apple Announces August 28th Ship Date of OSX v10.6, Snow Leopard!

There is some exciting news for Mac owners today, Apple announced that they will begin shipping the next version of OSX v10.6 on Friday, August 28th! Earlier this year they had projected that it would ship in September, so having it show up a month earlier is a nice surprise. If you haven’t done it yet, you can preorder yours here.

Canon announces update for EOS 5D Mark II

Perhaps I should have titled this post “Canon finally shows that they’re taking video in the 5D MKII seriously”. Hopefully this is a sign of Canon turning a new leaf; Canon never adds features to cameras via firmware updates. Let’s hope this isn’t the last time they do something like this.

While the video quality of the 5D MKII has always been stunning, it’s also been fairly limited due to the lack of manual exposure control in video mode. Canon had made the video mode so that everything was automatic: ISO, aperture and shutter speed. In order to manipulate the depth of field while in video mode, people have need to resort to work-arounds and hacks (ranging from using neutral density filters to unscrewing a lens partway so the camera can’t control it), but it looks like that will all be a thing of the past. For people looking to do serious video work with this camera, this is a dream come true.
